BTS RM and Jang Hang Joon’s new variety show ‘The Dictionary of Useless Human Knowledge’ has revealed a new teaser!
Following tvN’s popular programs ‘Dictionary of Useless Knowledge’ and ‘Dictionary of Useless Criminal Knowledge’, ‘Dictionary of Useless Human Knowledge’ is a journey that examines all human beings in the world from different perspectives. so that one can find a new side of oneself.
The show features six individuals who all specialize in different areas of knowledge and expertise. Director RM and BTS film director Jang Hang Joon will MC the program and will be joined by writer Kim Young Ha, physics professor Kim Sang Wook, forensics professor Lee Ho and astronomer Dr. Shim Chae Kyung.
In the latest trailer, the six individuals finally come together and start a lively discussion right from the start. As the show’s premise promises, they’re here to discuss the big questions, and they waste no time opening the trailer with the incredibly philosophical question, “What is man?”
This is followed by a host of other equally deep and complex questions: “Why are people happy? “Why do people love?” “Why do people fight?” and “Why do people die?” Despite all the discussions and thoughts we may have about these questions, the panelists agree that we all eventually come to the conclusion that our own opinions are “right” – which is what unfolds on this journey of self-discovery.
Novelist Kim Young Ha took the lead in opening the conversation, introducing a fictional murder case that took place on Saturn’s moon Titan in the year 2280. The six cast members will be sent to Titan to investigate the murder, though the exact plot details and its purpose in the overall we let the discussion unfold in the actual broadcast.
Physics professor Kim Sang Wook and astronomer Dr. Shim Chae Kyung will form a “scientific alliance” with only known facts to answer hypothetical questions. Their refusal to joke hypothetical questions like “If you could see the future, would you choose this?” gets quite a few laughs from the rest of the cast.
RM, who even wrote a song called “134340” for Pluto, then shares a story about how sad he was to see Pluto demoted from a planet. This raises even more expectations for this “scientific alliance” as it projects many emotions into what is essentially an inanimate entity that does not experience such emotions, as Dr. Shim Chae Kyung.
Meanwhile, forensics professor Lee Ho finds himself in the middle of what divides the sciences and the humanities, and is sure to grab viewers’ attention with his unique opinions and the occasional dad joke.
Viewers should also look forward to the chemistry between MCs “Hang Joonie and Nam Joonie”. The two offer some very insightful conversation points while making sure to keep the atmosphere light with their infectious laughter. Jang Hang Joon offers very realistic answers to people’s endless curiosity, brings new and interesting topics of his own, and adds another dimension to intellectual conversation. RM also provides questions and emotions unique to someone majoring in art, adding another layer to such complicated subjects.
At the end, RM jokes about the fate between him and this program. He explains that his stage name RM could technically stand for MC’s “The Dictionary Of Useless Human Knowledge” because the first word of the program’s Korean name sounds similar to the letter “R”.
